Howard University students readmitted this week after interim president Wayne A. I. Frederick confirmed that over 200 of the 502 first-year students who unenrolled week have gotten their spots back. The Howard University students readmitted update comes after days of backlash, from students and parents following the school’s decision to remove hundreds of incoming freshmen just weeks before fall classes were scheduled to begin.
Howard received about 37,000 applications for this year’s incoming class. That is part of why the Howard University students readmitted news spread fast once families began speaking out.
Why Were So Many Students Unenrolled?
According to Frederick, roughly 502 incoming freshmen were removed from Howard’s fall roster last week. Many had outstanding tuition balances left over after financial aid and scholarships were applied, and those unpaid tuition balances were the main trigger behind the unenrollments. Others were unenrolled over unreported immunization records.
Frederick told the AP that Howard had communicated tuition deadlines since March, with balances due by mid-July. He said the issue came down to families misunderstanding what they still owed.
“I don’t think it’s a simple matter of right or wrong. I think Howard adhered to its policies or procedures,” Frederick said.
Students learned that they had lost their spots days before classes were set to begin before any Howard University update about readmissions came through. Howard University is one of one hundred historically Black colleges and universities in the United States and Howard University’s size and reputation, as a historically Black institution made the story spread even faster. The short notice left many families with little time to arrange alternatives.
How the Backlash Led to Reinstatements
Once news of the unenrollments spread, Howard’s phone lines and inboxes were flooded with calls from parents and students trying to resolve tuition and housing questions. Frederick acknowledged that call volume became difficult to manage. He said emails were answered.
The school began meeting with families last week. The school reviewed financial aid documents and other paperwork on a case‑by‑case basis. I was surprised, by how many students were readmitted. By Wednesday Frederick confirmed the Howard University readmitted student count had passed 200. That count comes from 2,200 incoming students who remained enrolled after the initial cut.
One Student’s Experience: Keana Johnson
Keana Johnson, 17, lives in a youth shelter in New York City and was among the students originally unenrolled. A staff member from the shelter traveled with her by train to Howard’s campus Wednesday morning to resolve the issue in person. After meeting with a Howard official, she became one of the Howard University students readmitted that day.
“I feel great,” Johnson told the AP. “I do feel there was a lesson to learn from this. I shed tears over this and I was disheartened at first, but I felt like I couldn’t give up until I really got the final say-so that I couldn’t come.”

What Comes Next
The Howard University students readmitted update shows Howard responding as pressure from families increased. It remains unclear whether the university will change how it communicates tuition and immunization requirements ahead of future enrollment cycles.
Families still waiting on a decision can expect the same process that has already led to Howard University students readmitted cases so far. Direct outreach, updated documentation, and case-by-case review.
